— OVERVIEW

The country's second-largest sugar producer

CAEI — the Consorcio Azucarero de Empresas Industriales, or "Sugar Consortium of Industrial Companies" — is the operating name for a group of sugar-related businesses controlled by the Vicini family, one of the Dominican Republic's oldest industrial dynasties. Its core asset is the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón sugar mill in El Guano, San Pedro de Macorís, on the southeastern coast.

The company consolidated several previously separate operations — the Angelina, CAEI, and Cristóbal Colón mills — under the single CAEI brand in 2008. Today CAEI describes itself as a benchmark for sustainable agro-industrial practice in the region, and it holds both Bonsucro and ProTerra sustainable-sugarcane certification — a distinction it shares with Central Romana, which holds ProTerra certification as well.
