ENVIRONMENT
Central Romana’s environmental initiatives span its agricultural and industrial operations, with a focus on resource efficiency, waste reduction, and conservation. The company also collaborates with environmental authorities and local communities on efforts to protect forests and ecosystems, while seeking to improve the management of water and energy across its operations.
Green cane harvesting
The company says it has moved toward "green" harvesting that avoids pre-harvest cane burning, which it states reduces CO₂ emissions by more than 42,000 tons annually, and that it repurposes cachaza (a milling byproduct) as organic fertilizer.
Reforestation
The company reports planting more than 3,000 native trees — including ceiba, flamboyán morado, and acacia species — through annual programs run each spring.
Water & energy
Automated irrigation is credited with a 50% reduction in water use on the company's golf courses. A newer biomass boiler is projected to cut fossil fuel use by about 7 million gallons a year, alongside planned electrostatic precipitators aimed at reducing particulate emissions by more than 95%.
Certifications & commitments
Central Romana holds ISO 9001 certification and participates in the UN Global Compact. In 2018, it was also certified by ProTerra in social responsibility and environmental sustainability, following a seven-day audit covering its sugarcane plantations, mill operations, and external supplier operations.
